Your business signage works 24 hours a day. It’s the first thing a new customer sees, the thing that gets you noticed from the road, and the visual identity that people associate with your brand every time they pass your location.
Bad signage doesn’t just look unprofessional – it actively loses you customers. Here are the five most common signage mistakes we see businesses make in Dubai, and how to fix every one of them.
Mistake 1 – Too Much Text
This is the most common mistake by far. Business owners want to include everything – the company name, tagline, phone number, website, services list, and opening hours – all on one sign.
The problem is simple: a person walking or driving past your sign has 2-3 seconds to read it. If they can’t identify your business and what you do in that time, the sign has failed.
The fix: Your primary signage should have three elements only – your business name, what you do (in 3-5 words), and one contact method (phone number or website). Everything else belongs on secondary signage, window graphics, or your shopfront display.
Mistake 2 – Using Low-Resolution Artwork
We see this constantly. A business hands over a logo that was designed for a business card or website – a small JPEG at 72 DPI – and expects it to look sharp on a 3-metre sign.
The result is pixelated, blurry text and graphics that look cheap, regardless of how premium the signage material itself is.
The fix: Always supply your logo as a vector file (.ai, .eps, or .svg) for any signage work. Vector files scale to any size without quality loss. If you don’t have the original vector file from your designer, ask your signage supplier to recreate it – this is a standard service.
Mistake 3 – Poor Colour Contrast
Yellow text on white. Light grey on silver. Red on orange. These combinations might look acceptable on a screen but become completely illegible on a physical sign, especially at distance or in bright Dubai sunlight.
The fix: Use high-contrast colour combinations – dark on light or light on dark. The most readable combinations for outdoor signage in Dubai are:
- White or yellow text on dark navy, black, or dark green
- Black or dark blue text on white or cream
- White text on a bold red or deep blue background
Before approving artwork, view a printed proof or ask for a daylight mockup – colours that look fine on a monitor often read very differently in bright outdoor light.
Mistake 4 – Choosing the Wrong Material for the Location
Not all signage materials are suitable for all environments. We frequently see businesses in Dubai use indoor-grade materials outdoors, or cheap vinyl in high-traffic locations where it deteriorates within months.
Common material mismatches:
- Standard PVC banners used as permanent outdoor signs – they fade and tear quickly in UAE heat and wind
- Foam board used near entrances – it warps in humidity and looks poor within weeks
- Unlaminated prints in outdoor locations – sun degrades the ink rapidly
The fix: Match the material to the environment:
- Outdoor permanent signage: Aluminium composite panel (ACP), 3D acrylic lettering, or backlit LED signage
- Outdoor short-term displays: UV-laminated vinyl, mesh banners for wind resistance
- Indoor premium signage: Acrylic, brushed stainless steel lettering, backlit panels
- Indoor temporary displays: Foam board, Foamex, or mounted prints
Mistake 5 – No Illumination Plan
Dubai is a 24-hour city. Businesses operate in the evening, and customers are on the road at night. A sign that is perfectly visible during the day but invisible at night is only doing half its job.
Many businesses in Dubai skip illumination to save cost during the initial signage build – and then spend more later retrofitting it, or simply operate with a sign that goes dark every evening.
The fix: Plan for illumination from the beginning. Options include:
- Backlit LED signage – the most popular option for shop fronts. Clean, bright, and energy-efficient
- Halo-lit 3D letters – letters mounted off the wall with LED behind, creating a glow effect. High-end look for premium brands
- Spotlights on non-illuminated signs – a simple, cost-effective way to ensure visibility at night
The additional cost of building illumination into your signage from day one is always less than retrofitting it later.
A Quick Checklist Before You Order Signage in Dubai
- Is the text readable in 3 seconds from the intended viewing distance?
- Have you supplied vector artwork or a minimum 150 DPI file at actual print size?
- Does your colour scheme have high contrast for outdoor readability?
- Is the material appropriate for the location (indoor/outdoor, permanent/temporary)?
- Have you planned for night visibility?
